We made our state bird the Goldfinch because it is a beautiful birdClick for a larger version! and we see it a lot. This beautiful bird is a yellow, black, and gold bird.  It likes trees in the open especially in orchards and along roadsides.  The Goldfinch’s favorite foods are thistle and teasel seeds.  They also eat small seeds from other weeds, grasses, trees, tree buds, maple sap, and sometimes insects.  During winter the beautiful Eastern Goldfinch flies south for the winter.  Male or female both have orange beaks, but males have a black beak.  The Eastern Goldfinch lays four to six bluish white eggs.  The size of their eggs is the size of peanuts.  In winter they are often seen in flocks. The Goldfinch is also known as The Wild Canary.
