Hi, I’m Kiya, and I’m going to tell you about our day. The first thing we did today was to drop off our backpacks in our classroom and go out to the field for P.E.. Ms. Becker’s class ran the full mile for the first time. It is very hard to jog the whole mile. You need endurance, but even if you walk, jog, or run you will always make it to the finish. When I did, I got the time, 11 minutes and 28 seconds. For fifth grade to run the mile it takes about fourteen minutes all together. Before you know it you’re already in your classroom, but not today. The four fifth grade teachers had a surprise for us so we went to the benches to figure it out. Big News! Mrs. Ramos, Mr. Henning, Mrs. Becker, and Mr. Coley told the whole fifth grade that we were going to train. Then compete against other schools. Like the Olympics! Because the Olympics were coming to the USA! They also told us to stay healthy and exercise.
After we did P.E., we came inside the warm classroom and did morning business. Morning Business is basically where we write down our homework, and then go check our box. Our homework for tonight is to do a practice test or 3x’s each. A practice test is when a parent reads you the spelling words, and then grades and signs your test. 3x’s each is where you write your spelling words three times each. We also have math, but that depends on what teacher you have. There were other reminders like having our Literature circle jobs due, Science Weekly, and also our accelerated reading goal. There was a new thing for homework too. It was called the top ten choices for our state report. So that night we had to choose the top ten states we wanted to learn about. Then tomorrow we would pick who gets which state. After morning business we turned in our spelling homework which was a crossword puzzle from last night. We would usually go over it together, but today Mr. Coley, our teacher, changed his mind.
Next on the agenda we got to catch up. Mr. Coley said we got to catch up on the things we didn’t fully complete. Like A.R., Science Weekly, Literature circle jobs, and the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe story book. But then just to quickly we had to go to an assembly. There were six people who sang songs about the pillars of character.
When we came back from the assembly, there was about thirty minutes until recess. So Mr. Coley let us continue catching up. Finally it was a couple of minutes away from recess and Mr. Coley said, “Please get your math things out.” Because right after recess we gather our math things and leave.
So when the bell finally rang, we went to recess. You could play a lot of things. Like tetherball, wall ball, and more. I almost always choose football, though I am a girl. It’s fun. Time goes by quickly when it’s fun.
As soon as you know what’s happening your already in your math teacher’s room. My math teacher is Mrs. Ramos and I was assigned to her by my math level. So we came in and got our homework out. Leaving it to the side we started talking about our math challenge which we get every week. Following that, we checked our homework and put it in the math basket. Not everyone did so well, so we practiced more on that lesson. Once Mrs. Ramos was convinced we knew our stuff we went on to today’s lesson. Greatest Common Factors. Let me give you an example, let’s say you have the numbers 24 and 32. You would write down the factors. 24:1,2,3,4,6,8,12,24. 32:1,2,4,8,16,32. Now you figure out which one, greatest, factor they both have. Eight. That is the one factor they both have and the greatest. We learned our lesson then wrote down our homework which was our math challenge, a study guide for the lesson. Also in our book, pg.554 Lesson 6-4 #1-24. There was time leftover so we started on our homework. Math time was over after about twelve minutes.
It is downhill from here. Because then we went to Mr. Coley’s classroom and it was time for lunch. We lined up and we all went to the cafeteria because it was inclimate weather even though it was a perfect day out. Once we were done eating we went out to the playground and played. It felt kind of quick for lunch today. But at least we played.
When we got to the classroom it was like an instinct to get out a silent reading book. After about thirty minutes of reading Mr. Coley started lecturing us about having to read more to pass our reading goals. He told us that some teachers are having their students get 50 points or they won’t be able to go to a party, the fiftys hop. If Mr. Coley would have done that he said only five people would be going. But Mr. Coley isn’t making us do that, he just wants us to make an effort. If we don’t do that we won’t be going. Then it was time for the end of the day, science. First on science we corrected the page we had for homework. Then we got into actually learning about it. We took out our book and turned to a fresh, new page. We were starting lesson three titled, Where is fresh water found? We learned about this for 25 minutes. Then it was time to go home. Mr. Coley said the quiet seat wasn’t quiet.
It was a very nice day and I hoped you enjoyed it as much as I did!
