Claude Monet was born in 1840 in France. When he was young, he was
interested in the constantly changing appearance of the sea and sky. After
serving in the military from 1860 to 1862, he moved to Paris, where he met
Pierre August Renoir. Together, Monet and Renoir helped develop the
techniques of Impressionism. This way of painting has the artist use quick
brushstrokes and patches of bright color that blend together. Monet
specialized in painting outdoor settings, specifically garden and water
scenes.
